And that freehand tool is quite amazing! I’d recommend the program to anyone – the initial learning curve is short and you can produce something that looks pretty professional very quickly.

Well done and a big THANK YOU.
I must say you guys have out done yourself…
Ortelius as this application is not only the one of its kind, but you guys collective have some of the best customer support I have seen. If that alone isn’t worth the price, I don’t know what it is. Thank you again!
Keep up the great project. I’m a big fan.
I have both of your products and love them.
Really looking forward to using Ortelius 2.
Ortelius made my final project not only doable but enjoyable
This program single-handedly saved my skin this past semester. I was taking a course on History & Cartography, and… I found it easy to use but also felt it brought out the creativity. Onward, onward, onward!
Ortelius is the best program ever
So after 2 weeks of struggling in Illustrator… Wow. It only took me a few hours to complete what has (unsuccessfully) taken me weeks to accomplish. Well worth it!!!

I love Ortelius…
It is running better than I thought a mapping program like this would. It is easy to use and very helpful to my military map projects.
p.s. Love the product by the way ;-)

Cooler than you realize
I’ve tried many times to use [other] vector images… and they are just too much to buy, and too much to work with. The fact that you allow the user to draw roads and more, is cooler than you realize!

Some of the features I love
Some of the features I love including smart intersections and linear selection. These are many things I struggle with Adobe Illustrator on a daily basis.
Thanks for bringing a decent cartography program to the Mac!
All I can say is WOW!!!
The enhanced learning-demo templates are fantastic. I got to playing with the features… and I had been “playing” for almost 4 hours. Once again thank you for this great enhancement.

It’s perfect for my needs, learning to use Illustrator as an alternative would be overkill and a time killer. You’ve made the sophisticated Artboard much more intuitive and easy to use.
This app in my opinion is one of those hidden gems on the Mac App Store. I use it to create vector illustrations for 2D games as well as GUI elements for various projects. I love Artboard’s small footprint as well as very little memory usage, which allows me to take my work on the road. I have no problems with large canvas projects and it’s all on a MacBook 12” Retina. It’s quick to create simple to complex objects with it’s “smart” objects feature and typing text on paths is so simple I am looking at my old projects to improve on… even though you can achieve things with ease… but don’t let this fool you… this app can go head to head with the much more complex and expensive apps.

Compared to the dinosaur that I was using…this is fantastic. I draw photo booth props and party printables and this is quite perfect! I was so aggrivated when Adobe turned to a monthly/annual subscription based service for their software and the only other program I liked was not compatible with Mac….so I’ve been searching for something else for a while. Not sure how this escaped my attention before. If you’re up in the air about purchasing…their site offers a free trial. Check it out!

Wanted to let everyone at Mapdiva know how pleased I am with my purchase of Artboard. Easy to learn and use. Love the styles and art you’ve included. The online-learning resources (and support) are superb.
Here is the ONE feature that sold me: linear and polar duplication. It’s a must-have timesaving feature that other “basic” vector drawing apps sorely lack! If it helps anyone to decide between another “draw” app and this one: Don’t buy an app unless you can demo it with a trial version. (mapdiva does!)
What else does mapdiva provide that the other “draw” guys don’t? A website loaded with support and training such as User Forums and Artboard Training. Artboard also comes with a fairly nice (better than nothing) clipart and styles gallery. The ONE feature (for me) that’s missing: SVG export. But, mapdiva are actively improving Artboard. In all, Artboard is a “sleeper” vector drawing app. It should be listed as one of the Top Paid apps.

Remarkable Vector Art Program
I’ll keep this short & sweet: Artboard is a great drawing program will tons of features and a lot cheaper than other solutions out there. It’s worth the money I spent on it (at the time I got it on sale), and will be a program I’ll continue to use for many months (and probably years) to come.
If you’re an artist or graphic designer, you won’t regret dropping the cash for this app.

I’ve been using Artboard for almost a year and it has been terrific. Artboard has allowed me to develop headings and graphics for two self-published books. The quality of images is very high, and even after submitting my PDF’s to a professional book printer there was no issue with the image quality. Besides the book, I have used this program to make graphics for my website, stickers, t-shirts, and promotional materials for my start-up. Interface is real user-friendly. I still feel like I have a lot to learn and to use this program fully, but it has already produced some amazing results. And it is very affordable! Thanks for making a great product!

Great Family Drawing Program!
I’ve really enjoyed using Artboard as a fun drawing program – the clipart and styles really appeal to me (I’m not a designer so it gives me something to work with beyond basic lines and shapes).
Amongst the artwork are ton of Map outlines of every country plus every US State – Plus every countries Flag – This would be great for most students – I’m sure my kids will use it on a report at some point, and like all the clip art, you can disect it and change the colors, remove unwanted pieces etc.
Comparing this version to past versions, I see a number of complaints from prior reviews have been addressed which is great – Artboard is clearly under active development and I think this is the 2nd update I’ve seen since I bought it – overall I feel like it was a good buy.
I do want to share one tip – something that caught me up when I started – When looking at clip art – You’ll see it’s organized by folders – if you browse into a folder, then use search, you’re only searching that folder – so for example if you happen to browse the maps I was just talking about, then search for “tree” you won’t see any trees in the clip art browser, even though there are 60 of them!
Overall, I think it’s a great little program, especially for the price.

Remarkably full featured
What a great product this has turned out to be. The feature set is surprisingly rich and well thought out. The interface decisions are clean and intuitive. It’s always a delight when you realize that there aren’t a lot of controls to have to manipulate, but there’s a lot of things you can do.
Don’t give up on this one too early— it really is straighforward to work with, but it has capabilities you’re not used to in simpler vector editors so certain features aren’t where you expect them to be— such as shadows residing under both stroke and fill styles. The gradient controls are wonderful, and the intricate settings for stroke styling is a lot of fun.
I’ve interacted with their support forums and found them to be quick to respond, and slow to loose patience.
I look forward to the continued evolution of this great application.

Artboard is awesome, I like it better than Adobe Illustrator!
There is something about Artboard that is very inspiring… I highly recommend both Artboard, and following a few of the tutorials they have (There is a link to these right when you start the program). With a very small bit of effort on your part, you will get a LOT out of Artboard!
There is something about Artboard that is very inspiring. It took me a little bit of time to understand the interface, so if you’re new, I would reccomend you look at the tutorial videos they have online and try a few of the practice templates they have in the program.
I think the reason I like it so much better than illustrator is that I feel Artboard gives me everything in one place, and it’s easy to find. There’s a bunch of built in clip art, there’s tons of styles and one thing not to overlook is that there are actually some decent background images you can choose when you create a new drawing. Speaking of the clip art, its amazingly easy to customize and change. All the clip art is actually artboard objects, and you can change the colors, line weights etc. You can also ungroup the art and use the individual pieces of the more complex art.
There is one tip I’d like to share, because this tripped me up when I first used the program: The “Styles” and “Clip art” are mixed together in the same browser. Even though you don’t see it in the browser, they are all organized by folders (you can see this if you click the little bank icon on the styles and clipart browser) When you do a search, it only searches the current folder! This tripped me up because I was looking for the christmas tree while doing one of the tutorials online, and I could not find it! (I must have navigated to a folder using the bank icon when I was looking for something else) Its easy to fix this, There is an icon on this browser (it looks like a bank) on the top, Click that, then click “Artboard collection” then click All items, then do your search!
I’ve already made a few neat illustrations, and have tons of other ideas I know Artboard will be great for.
I’ve even used Artboard to create some art, then copied and pasted that art into other programs to animate, and that worked great, the art came out beautifully!
So in summary, I find Artboard to be a great little Gem that I’ve really enjoyed using artistically. I highly reccomend both Artboard, and following a few of the tutorials they have (There is a link to these right when you start the program) With a very small bit of effort on your part, you will get a LOT out of Artboard!

Highly recommended. After reading quite a lot of reviews I’ve downloaded a few trial applications offered for vector drawing. Out of the ones I’ve tried Artboard came first by far. Hey… kudos to the team for a good product on the way to becoming great. Do not listen to people who say it is not a good drawing tool — if you understand vector drawing and have used the current leader, Illustrator, or even Canvas Draw or other vector drawing tools, this one is done quite well and you will be right at home. There are two reasons I do not yet give this a 5 – star. We need to have the ability to save in .ai format, or eps, and we need to be able to close vector paths. I promise you guys if they do these two things, I will come back and rate it 5 stars, willingly pay up to $50 more for the application, and I will not only tell everyone to switch from the overpriced Illustrator, but I will actively work online to bring more people to the better priced and good performing product that is Artboard. Two other less pressing items: More Clip Art, and a little more thought into the UI… Layers might be better being repositionable — I find that I keep having to place the tools over layers and clickable items then are covered and obscured. Hey… keep going, and the market will come.

Ortelius, the premier map-drawing tool from Mapdiva, is a wonder in itself. This comes from a dedicated Photoshop user, who couldn’t draw water from a tap. So I had no idea how clean a vector-based system can be in creating over 90 page-sized maps for a new edition of the Route 66 Traveler’s Guide and Roadside Companion. Without Ortelius, I never could have finished the task. So clean were the lines and fonts that I began using it to design everything from business cards to Web pages.
What I wished for was Ortelius Lite – same powerful internal engine, but with a little whimsy and a few tricks thrown in. Enter Artboard from Mapdiva! Same intuitive user interface, vector graphics, snappy Bezier curves, a library filled with tools, and the capacity to stack layers and styles to your heart’s content.

Designed for the Designer!
This is what vector drawing should be. It’s simple to the point of not getting in the way of creativity but complex enough to compete with any vector package out there. The drag-n-drop libarary is beautifully done, the style objects (my name not the apps) are easily modifiable and path decorator allows the use of objects following paths IE: draw out a bicycle chain. More export features would be nice but for those Illustartor users complaining the PDF export maintains layers and shapes pretty nicely. This is a Fun Fun App!

Wow. What an incredible value. I was looking for a vector drawing program to do a small, but fairly complex site plan with layers for differentiating services. I’m not an artist or architect, nor have used anything more complicated than iPhoto. I tried a couple of drawing program demos, but was very impressed with the easy learning curve of this program and the ability to do everything I needed with the provided tools. Other programs I tried were much more expensive, but more importantly to me, much more difficult to learn and use. I’ve used a number of Mac vector drawing programs, and still haven’t found one that really stands out. Artboard may well be that program. I’ve used Mapdiva’s Ortelius and been impressed with the ease of use that it has. This has been brought to Artboard, along with a lot of additional work to make this a truly flexible program. It has a slightly different interface to many programs with its use of styles – which can take some getting used to. However, my early attempts to use it have shown that this has its own advantages. It handles lists and tables beautifully and generally feels very responsive and easy to use. I can generate the shapes I want quickly and easily, and the built in styles offer a wide variety of ways to jazz up drawings.
The program also makes a lot of typical tasks very easy – such as adding handles to a point on a bezier curve. Some of the clip art is very nice indeed, and items such as the “Shiny Buttons” lend themselves to some very attractive diagrams. I’d love to see some magnetic connectors to make laying out a diagram easier, but otherwise this is a very impressive version 1.

Overall very good program for basic vector artwork
Overall, strong v1.0 and well worth the $20 if you need a great basic vector-based illustration tool. This design veteran recommends Artboard.
OK, while Artboard by Mapdiva will not replace your copy of Adobe Illustrator, it is an extremely well-rounded and polished app capable of doing a lot of vector illustration tasks. I’ve been using Illustrator since it was called “Illustrator 88″ (spring of 1987 I think) and I’m always on the look-out for simple vector drawing programs that can be used by a wide range of user types. Acorn and Pixelmator fill the niche for bitmap eidting programs that can replace a lot of what Photoshop can do, and I’d argue that Artboard is capable of doing the same for vector work.
Pluses: Fast and responsive, no crashes or problems on any of the machines I’ve worked with it on (27″ i3 iMac, 15″ i7 MacBook Pro, the kid’s mini). Silky smooth in fact. Well-organized and simple UI. Great basic tools. Fast tools even with big pieces of art and numerous layers. Some cool styles and clip art. Ability to export work as PDF/JPG/TIFF/PNG. very simple to understand bezier curve tools and adjustments (especially for people who might not understand vector-vs-bitmap drawing). Support for both my Wacom tablets. Decent text tool. Great ability to customize toolbar with many features beginners will want to see/have handy.
(Minor) Issues: No way to separate/float the layers palette like the others; it remains attached to the drawing area (grrr). A few keyboard commands inconviently missing (alignment of objects, create new layer, move up and down through layers with keyboard, etc, but that may be my Illustrator background talking). I’d personally like the ability to save out as an EPS file with layers intact.
Overall, strong v1.0 and well worth the $20 if you need a great basic vector-based illustration tool. This design veteran recommendeds Artboard.

Adobe Illustrator watch out!
Artboard has powerful drawing features that match ones found in high-end vector drawing, CAD, and mapping applications. In fact, Artboard’s features are a subset of those found in the more expensive Ortelius software, that is used for professional mapping applications.
Artboard has the concept of layers that you can place objects on, order in different ways, and show and hide at will. Even the guides you snap to and the Grid (Graph Paper) are on their own separate layers.
A path style can be made up of an amazing array of strokes and fills that combine together to make up the final result. For example, do you want a line that is yellow in the middle, with a dashed center-line and two thick red borders on each side? no problem. The included library of clip art, styles, and templates by itself is worth the low price of this application (and it is a 5-computer license! thanks to the App Store policy). The interface is beautiful and uncluttered.
The same way I now use Pixelmator more frequently than Photoshop for simpler tasks. I expect to use Artboard for line drawings far more frequently than Illustrator.
Artboard is a simple, elegant, and powerful drawing application. I highly recommend it.

Wonderfully versatile app… a user interface that I am sure most Mac users will find easy, I have to say that ARTBOARD, to me, is bordering on fantastic!
The help pages are clear and easy to understand.
This app draws out my creativity like no other: I have Vector Designer, Pixelmator, and Image Well. I must say that after using ARTBOARD for just one hour, I have created more, and gained more personal satisfaction with the results than ever before.
The clipart library that is included with this app is extensive and well organised.
Having some experience with the other apps mentioned above, it is fair to say that ARTBOARD shares some of the best features of those apps. Add to that a great choice of templates, a large range of clipart, and a user interface that I am sure most Mac users will find easy, I have to say that ARTBOARD, to me, is bordering on fantastic!

Geography on the Mac is becoming an increasingly viable option in the geography curriculum as technologies continue to change and evolve. While Mac market share has been steadily on the rise, particularly among student bodies, the platform has historically been weak in supporting geography-related tool sets. That landscape is changing with new software being introduced and the opening of the platform to support the Windows operating system (OS). This session is designed to showcase a variety of geospatial Mac OS applications that are being used within the academic environment as integrated classroom research and learning tools.

10.07.10 Mapdiva co-founder Jill Saligoe-Simmel will join mapmakers, map users, map librarians, and map enthusiasts in St. Petersburg, Florida this October to talk about the thing we all love – maps! Jill will demonstrate Ortelius’ map symbol creation and sharing tools at Practical Cartography Day on October 13th. The North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS), founded in 1980, is an organization comprised of specialists from private, academic, and government organizations whose common interest lies in facilitating communication in the map information community. More information on the conference can be found on the NACIS website.

In her recently released cartography textbook, Principles of Map Design (2010), Dr. Judith A Tyner provides a balanced discussion of the considerations regarding cartography software selection. Given that the needs of every user are unique, this is a valuable contribution for those considering which tools to use. As relatively new cartography software, we’re also thrilled to see Ortelius included in the review. Here is an excerpt from the book:
Choosing the Right Cartography Tool: How Will It Be Produced?
“The principles of design apply whether the map is drawn with pen and ink or a sophisticated computer, but one should have an idea of how the map will be made at the beginning.
Software for computer-produced maps is of four types: GIS, illustration/presentation, CADD (computer-assisted design and drafting), mapping, or some combination of these. GIS software is a powerful analytical tool with map presentation capabilities. With GIS, data can be linked to places and calculations can be made. As of this writing there are some design limitations and some types of symbol that are difficult or impossible to create using GIS. These problems will be solved at some point. By the same token, some symbols that are easy to produce with GIS cannot easily be created manually or with presentation software. Presentation or illustration software, such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw, is used by graphic artists and allows for highly creative products. However, such software does not allow analysis, calculation, or linking data to locations automatically. If these capabilities are not needed, a presentation program can be a good choice. Like illustration programs, CADD doesn’t allow for analysis. There are some mapping programs, such as Microsoft MapPoint, that have limited GIS capability and allow some simple analysis and creation of maps, but do not allow much flexibility in map design and composition. Some recent mapping programs, such as Ortelius and MapPublisher, combine GIS and design (Figure 2.9). If one is using a dedicated GIS, combining it with a presentation program usually allows for the best analysis and presentation product” (p.26, emphasis added).
Principles of Map Design offers an authoritative, reader-friendly introduction of the core principles of good map design that apply regardless of the production methods or technical approach. The book addresses the crucial questions that arise at each step of map making: Who is the audience? What is the purpose of the map? Where and how will it be used?
About This Particular Macintosh awards Ortelius map illustration software a rating of “Excellent” in their recent review. About This Particular Macintosh (ATPM) is a monthly Internet magazine created to celebrate the personal computing experience on the Apple Macintosh. The ATPM review included testing a wide assortment of Ortelius features, particularly the versatility of pre-packaged map templates. Ortelius receives the highest rating based on the overall usage, purpose, and documentation of the vector-based cartography software for Mac OS X.
Their conclusion? “Mapdiva has a winner on its hand. For now, Ortelius has found a niche market to fill. There are some Mac map-making programs out there, but none in the price range or that possess the features found in Ortelius. With the specific map tools found in Ortelius, it is easy to make maps, whether from templates or imported bitmaps, or even if you have to start with a blank page. You can take mapping even further by importing shapefiles, many of which are freely available on the Web. If you have a mapping need, Ortelius makes an excellent choice.” In his evaluation of Ortelius, reviewer Linus Ly continues, “there is much potential in using Ortelius as an educational tool.”

Softpedia awards Ortelius map illustration software 4-stars, with its highest ratings for user interface and features. Softpedia reviewers thoroughly test software products following a series of characteristics and parameters, starting from the installation of the product and to the help system, with ratings based on aspects such as how well organized and intuitive is the products user interface and how useful and well implemented is the product’s feature set.
Softpedia’ Mac Editor, Alexandru Tanase, notes, “There are a lot of fine things about Ortelius. Fi[r]st of all, Ortelius comes with a lot of templates that can be used at any time. Also, Ortelius is very easy to use, has a simple interface, and most of the tools you need are available in the main screen. The graphics are good, the maps look great, and really challenge you to use the program and give it your best in order to create a work of art.”
Their conclusion? “If you like drawing maps, or you do this at the office on a regular basis, be sure to use or just give Ortelius a try. You may find that even the most difficult maps can be created in a record time with no headaches. So, if you are a young cartographer, I truly recommend this program. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.”
