Edit Path Tools

After paths and curves are drawn, they are easily adjusted using the Select [s] tool, Add Point [=] and Delete Point [-] tools. Modifier keys provide ability to fine-tune path and curve handles, shown in blue while path is selected.

Add Point Tool

Artboard Add or Delete Points from Path
  1. Choose the Insert Path Point [=]  tool.
  2. Click onto an existing path where the point is to be added.

HINT: As needed, convert a shape to edit path mode to show points.

Delete Point Tool

  1. With the path selected, choose the Delete Path Point [-]  tool.
  2. Click on the point(s) that is to be removed.

Cut Path Tool

  1. Click onto the path at the location of the cut, or use a cutting motion with the tool.

To Move Points on an Existing Path

  1. Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path.
  2. Press and drag the point that is to be moved. Alternatively, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the point incrementally in any direction.

HINT: Points move at the set graph paper increments when moving with keyboard arrow keys.

HINT: To select multiple points along a path, hold the SHIFT key while selecting.

Shortcuts & Modifier Keys for Curve Handle Adjustment

When adjusting curve handles, the length of the left and right ends of the handle are adjusted independently unless you use modifier keys.

  1. Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path.
  2. Press and drag a point or curve handle with the cursor.

Do one of the following:

  • DRAG HANDLE AWAY FROM POINT – Hold the COMMAND key while adjusting the curve handles
  • ADJUST CURVE HANDLES INDEPENDENTLY (including length and direction) – Hold the COMMAND key while adjusting the curve handles
  • KEEP HANDLES SYMETRICAL – Hold the OPTION key while adjusting the curve handles
  • TOGGLE SNAPPING – After clicking on the handle, hold the CONTROL key and drag
  • CONSTRAIN ANGLE OF HANDLES (15-degree increments) – Hold the SHIFT key while adjusting a curve handle
  • NUDGE POINTS – Select the points and move with the keyboard arrow-keys (nudge will move in increments based on your drawing units and graph paper settings)
  • OPEN A CLOSED PATH – Hold the COMMAND key and drag the end point away from the start point; alternatively, right-click the path and choose “Open Path” from the contextual menu; or use the Cut Path [u] tool

Expand Curve Handles on an Existing Path

Do one of the following:

  • With the path to be edited selected, choose ‘Edit > Path > Select All Handles’ then ‘Edit > Path > Expand Handles’ from the main menu, or
  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, while holding the COMMAND key, press and drag the each curve handle outward from the point with collapsed handles, or
  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, while holding the OPTION + COMMAND keys, press and drag the both curve handles symmetrically away from the point with collapsed handles, or
  • With the path to be edited selected, right-click the path and choose ‘Select All Handles’, then right-click again and choose ‘Expand Handles’ from the contextual menu.

HINT: Any object, once converted to a path, can have its curve handles expanded.

Collapse Curve Handles on an Existing Path

Do one of the following:

  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, click to select a single handle to be collapsed, then right-click the path and choose ‘Collapse Handles’ from the contextual menu, or
  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, click to select a single handle to be collapsed, then ‘Edit > Path > Collapse Handles’ from the main menu, or
  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, hold the SHIFT key and click to select multiple handles to be collapsed, then right-click the path and choose ‘Collapse Handles’ from the contextual menu, or
  • Choose the Select [s] tool and select the path, hold the SHIFT key and click to select multiple handles to be collapsed, then ‘Edit > Path > Collapse Handles’ from the main menu, or
  • With the path to be edited selected, right-click the path and choose ‘Select All Handles’, then right-click again and choose ‘Collapse Handles’ from the contextual menu., or
  • With the path to be edited selected, choose ‘Edit > Path > Select All Handles’ then ‘Edit > Path > Collapse Handles’ from the main menu.

To Join Two Existing Paths

To join two paths into one path, move the endpoints close together then choose the ‘Edit > Paths > Join’ (COMMAND + J keyboard shortcut) from the main menu.
