The Text Tab

Text properties, such as font and color, are applied directly through controls in the Text Tab.

Open the Text Tab

Add a text object to your drawing, or select one or more existing text objects (text box or text on path). With the text object(s) selected, choose the font and associated style elements, such as size, color, and shadow.

To Select a Text Box

Use the Select tool and click once onto a Text Box or Text On Path to select it.

To Edit Text

To edit within text, you must select for editing and type to replace highlighted text, or place the insertion point where you want to begin editing.

To edit existing text, double-click to make text active for editing (active text is highlighted). Begin typing. To edit only a portion of existing text, double-click to make text active for editing, then click (or drag cursor over) to place the insertion point where you want to begin editing.

Fonts and Size

  1. With text selected, choose a font, and optionally a font variant, from the drop-down lists. The list displays fronts available on the user’s system. When you have numerous additional fonts, there may be a slight delay when the list loads the first time this drop-down is viewed.
  2. With text selected, drag the slider control or enter a value to change the size of the selected font. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcuts.

Properties

With text selected, choose from bold, italic, underline, strikethrough.

Align Text

With text selected, choose from left, centered, right or fully justified alignment. Click the buttons to change alignment to the top, middle or bottom of the text box.

HINT: Text On Path has “Justified” alignment by default, giving it a stretched appearance across the entire length of the path.

Capitalization Options

Choose from Normal Case (appears as entered), Upper Case (all capitalized letters), Lower Case, or Capitalized Words (first letter capitalized).

Wrap

Wraps text within its bounding box.

Outline and Mask

With text selected, drag the slider control or enter a value to add an outline stroke or a mask (knockout) around text as a percentage of font size.

Click the colorwells to adjust color, and/or transparency, as desired. Set to ‘0’ to return to no outline or mask.

Shadow

Check the ‘Shadow’ setting to apply a shadow to selected text. Shadow color (and opacity), blur, offset and angle controls affect the appearance of the shadow.

Kern (or Spreading / Tracking)

Text can be spread out across and area (called “tracking”).

Select the text and do one of the following:

  • Hold the OPTION + COMMAND keys and repeatedly pressing the right Arrow (end) key to spread text, or
  • Choose ‘Text > Kern > Loosen’ from the main menu. Repeat as necessary to get a wide spread, or
  • Hold the OPTION + COMMAND keys and repeatedly pressing the left Arrow (end) key to tighten tracking, or
  • Choose ‘Text > Kern > Tighten’ from the main menu. Repeat as necessary to tighten the spread, or
  • Choose ‘Text > Kern > Use Default’ from the main menu to reset to the original tracking.

HINT: Tracking command may also used to add (or tighten) space between selected letters, rather than the entire text box or path.

Multi-Colored or Styled Text

  1. In the Text Tab, click onto the text color-well and drag the Color Picker popup away to release it.
  2. Double-click existing text with the Select [s] tool to make the text active for editing; highlight desired text.
  3. Change color and font properties as desired.
  4. To end text editing, click outside of the text box or press the ESC key.

To Reset to the Default Text

Choose ‘Reset Text Style’ from the Action Menu at the bottom of the Text Tab.
