Arrange Duplicate and Edit Layers

Artboard layers are discrete, like a stack of tracing paper (or transparent mylar). Select one layer at a time to work with the objects contained within that layer.

Arrange Layers

To rearrange the order of a layer, do one of the following:

  • Press on an unlocked layer and drag it to the left side between the layers where you want it placed (a yellow line indicates its drop position), or
  • Click a layer and choose ‘Layer > Arrange > Bring To Front / Bring Forward / Send To Back / Send Backward’ from the main menu.

Layer Group

Do one of the following:

  • Click the Layer Group icon at the bottom of the Layers panel, or
  • Choose ‘Layer > New Layer Group’ from the main menu.

Then do one of the following:

  • With the Layer Group selected, add a new layer. The new layer will be contained within the layer group, or
  • Drag an existing layer(s) into the new layer group.

Expand / Collapse Layer Group

Click the triangle to the left of the layer group name.

Select Layer in a Group

Click the individual layer in the group (make sure the layer group  is visible).

Duplicate Layer

In the layers panel, do one of the following:

  • Right-click the layer and choose ‘Duplicate Layer’ from the contextual menu, or
  • Click a layer then choose ‘Layer > Duplicate’ from the main menu.

Delete Layer

  1. Make the Drawing Layer active (the layer must be unlocked).
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click the ‘-‘ button at the bottom of the Layers Tab, or
    • Choose ‘Layer > Delete Layer…’ from the main menu, or
    • Right-click the layer and choose ‘Delete Layer…’ from the contextual menu.
  3. A dialog appears indicating the number of objects contained on the layer with a confirmation required to delete the layer.

Move an Object(s) From One Layer to a New Layer

You can move an object from one layer to a new layer. This moves the object to a new layer without changing its coordinates on the drawing canvas.

  1. Make a selection of object(s) in your drawing.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Choose ‘Layer > Move To > New Layer’ from the main menu, or
    • Cut and Paste the selection to a new layer that has been added.

Move an Object(s) From One Layer to Another Existing Layer

You can move an object from one layer to another. This moves the object to another layer without changing its coordinates on the drawing canvas.

  1. Make a selection of object(s) in your drawing.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Choose ‘Layer > Move To…’  from the main menu and choose from the list of layers. Note, the move-to layer must be visible and unlocked to accept the objects, or
    • In the Layers Tab, drag objects from one drawing layer to another layer, or
    • Cut and Paste the selection to a different layer.

Auto-Activate Clicked Layer

Artboard layers are discrete, similar to layers of transparent mylar – select one layer at a time to work with the objects contained within that layer. ‘Auto-Activate Clicked Layer’ is a preference that enables activating a layer as objects within that layer are clicked

  1. Open ‘Artboard > Preferences…’ Options pane
  2. Check ‘Auto-activate Clicked Layer’.
  3. With the Select [s] tool, click on an object in your drawing. As needed, the layer containing the object is activated dynamically.
