How Does Ortelius Make It Possible For Anyone To Create a Custom Map?
Ortelius makes it possible for anyone to make great looking custom map graphics through a three-fold approach to fit most any mapping need:
- Making maps and plans from preloaded templates. Ortelius comes pre-loaded with several scaled plan templates and world, region, and several country outlines. These maps are fully editable vector graphics with intelligent information, such as country name and population figures, behind the map graphics. This makes it possible to quickly select, re-color, and label map features.
- Trace over scanned maps, aerial photographs, and images. Scanned maps, aerial photographs, and images are easily imported into Ortelius using a drag-and-drop interface from the Image Browser. Drawing scale is calibrated to real-world dimensions using Ortelius’ Ruler tool. With 20+ drawing and cartography tools, Ortelius excels at “hand traced” custom map graphics.
- Import existing (GIS) map data. Map data are routinely produced and maintained by all levels of public and private organizations, such as Natural Earth Vector, the U.S. National Atlas (USGS) and the World Health Organization, and many are available to the public. Until now, few tools have been available to the general consumer to use these rich map data sources. Ortelius imports map point, line, and polygon features as graphical objects and retains the attribute information associated with those features, making it possible to select, edit, and label features. Ortelius Standard Edition limits the use of these map data in graphic space so they are as easy-to-use as clip-art – though they remain as information rich editable vector graphics. The Ortelius Professional Edition (currently under development) extends the geospatial abilities to handle real-world coordinate space (georeferenced) and multiple map projections, making overlay of multiple layers easy.
